Therapy Focus for February: The Power of Breathwork

As we transition from the depths of winter into the early stirrings of spring, February presents a perfect time to focus on breathwork. During the colder months, the body often enters a state of dormancy, and breathwork can be an incredibly effective tool for awakening our internal systems and preparing for the energetic months ahead. Breathwork allows the body to move out of its hibernation-like state and begin its process of renewal.

Awakening the Body through Breath

If you observe animals emerging from hibernation, you'll notice that their first instinct is to yawn and stretch. This physical release helps regulate their nervous system, circulatory system, and lymphatic systems, all of which are essential for overall well-being. Similarly, breathwork works in harmony with these natural processes by stimulating and activating the body's systems, including the nervous system, muscles, and organs.

Breathwork is a profound way to revive the body from the stillness of winter and prepare it for the active months of spring and summer. When practiced with a trained Breathwork coach, it can also help you uncover and release deep-seated emotional and physical trauma. While this release can be intense, it's important to trust that your body is ready to let go of what no longer serves you.

Why Breathwork Matters

Breathwork is not just about deep breathing; it's about being mindful of the breath you're taking and using it as a tool for healing and growth. For many, it may seem simple to breathe, but most people breathe shallowly into their chest. This type of breathing is often associated with stress, anxiety, and the fight-or-flight response. True, conscious breathing involves taking deep breaths through the nose, filling your belly-not your

chest.

By breathing into the belly, you activate the diaphragm, engaging muscles in your back, core, pelvic floor, and even your stomach. This type of deep, intentional breath is akin to a full-body workout for the respiratory system. Just as a physical workout strengthens the body, breathing deeply strengthens the body's internal systems and prepares it for the energetic shifts that come in the spring months.

How to Practice Breathwork Daily

Breathing properly involves expanding the belly as you inhale, as though inflating a balloon. Focus on taking a deep breath through the nose, allowing the air to fill your belly and expand outward, even wrapping around to the back. When you exhale, let the breath naturally release, drawing back toward your core. This practice of mindful breathing helps regulate your body, calming the nervous system and enhancing focus and energy.

Here's how to incorporate conscious breathwork into your routine:

In the Morning: Before rushing out of bed, sit for a moment and take 9 conscious breaths. Breathe deeply through your nose, expanding your belly as you inhale, and let the exhale happen naturally. Follow this with a gentle stretch of your arms, neck, and body to awaken the fascia and muscles. This mindful practice will help you start your day grounded and centered.

At Night: Before you go to sleep, take a few minutes for breathwork. You can use soothing strokes down your face, neck, and chest to release tension, allowing your body to transition into a relaxed state. Deep, conscious breathing can help calm the mind and prepare the body for a restful night's sleep.

Breathwork for Healing and Transformation

Breathwork is a powerful tool for regulating the body, healing from trauma, and enhancing both physical and mental well-being. The simple act of focusing on your breath can have profound effects on your energy, mindset, and overall health. It's especially valuable during this time of transition, as we prepare for the more active and expansive energy of the months to come.

As you begin your breathwork practice this February, remember that it's about consistency and mindfulness. It's a journey, and by embracing the rhythm of your breath, you create space for healing and growth.
