A Beautiful Time to Begin Your Reiki Journey: Discover the Healing Wisdom of Usui Shiki Ryōhō

As summer unfolds, there is often a quiet sense of looking ahead.

The lighter days invite us to enjoy the present, while gently encouraging us to reflect on what we wish to carry into the seasons that follow. Autumn has always been nature's invitation to turn inwards. It is a season of release, reflection and renewal, reminding us that letting go creates space for new growth.

If you have been feeling drawn towards Reiki, perhaps this gentle pull is inviting you to begin a journey that is far deeper than simply learning a healing technique. Perhaps it is inviting you home to yourself.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a traditional Japanese system of natural healing and spiritual development founded by Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century. The word Reiki is often translated as universal life energy, although its true meaning reaches far beyond a simple definition. At its heart, Usui Shiki Ryōhō is a practice of presence.

It is a gentle yet profound path of self-healing, self-discovery and personal transformation. Through simple daily practices, meditation, the Reiki Precepts, and hands-on healing, Reiki supports us in cultivating greater awareness, compassion and inner peace. Rather than giving us something we do not already possess, Reiki gently helps us reconnect with the wisdom, resilience and healing capacity that already exists within us. It is not a religion, nor does it require any particular beliefs. It simply asks us to become present.

How Was Reiki Discovered?

The origins of Reiki begin in Japan with Mikao Usui (1865–1926), a spiritual seeker, educator and practitioner who devoted much of his life to exploring ways of cultivating health, balance and spiritual understanding. Contrary to some modern myths, Reiki was not discovered through a single miraculous event or ancient lost teaching. Instead, it emerged from years of study, meditation and personal spiritual practice.

In March 1922, Usui undertook a twenty-one-day period of fasting, meditation and prayer on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain just north of Kyoto. It was during this retreat that he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, known in Japanese as satori. Following this experience, he found that he was able to work with a subtle healing energy and recognised that this gift could be shared to support the wellbeing of others.

Rather than keeping this experience to himself, Usui developed a practical system of spiritual cultivation and natural healing that became known as Usui Reiki Ryōhō. His teachings centred not only on hands-on healing, but on living a mindful and compassionate life through daily practices such as meditation, breathing techniques, self-treatment and the Five Reiki Precepts. For Usui, Reiki was never simply a healing technique. It was a way of living with greater awareness, gratitude and harmony.

Today, Reiki continues to be practised around the world, yet its essence remains unchanged. It is a gentle path of self-healing and spiritual development that invites us to slow down, reconnect with ourselves and remember the innate wisdom that has always been within us.

My Reiki Lineage

In Reiki, lineage is deeply important. It is a thread of wisdom and connection that links every practitioner back to the founder of the system, Mikao Usui. More than simply a list of names, a Reiki lineage honours the teachers who have carefully preserved, embodied and passed on these sacred teachings from one generation to the next. It reminds us that Reiki is a living tradition, shared from heart to heart, hand to hand and soul to soul.

I am honoured to carry the following Usui Shiki Ryōhō Reiki lineage:

Mikao Usui

Chujiro Hayashi

Hawayo Takata

Bethel Phaigh

William Lee Rand

Sharon Carrington

Phiona Hutton

Every teacher in this lineage has contributed to preserving the integrity, compassion and spirit of Reiki, ensuring that these teachings continue to be shared with authenticity and respect.

When you train with me, you become part of this lineage too. You are not simply learning a technique or receiving an attunement. You are stepping into a tradition that has been lovingly passed from teacher to student for over a century. It is a privilege and a responsibility that I hold with deep gratitude.

I teach Reiki slowly, intentionally and with reverence for its Japanese roots because I believe Reiki is not something to collect. It is something to embody. My intention is to create a nurturing space where each student can experience Reiki as a lifelong practice of self-healing, presence and spiritual growth, allowing the teachings to unfold naturally over time.

As your teacher, I will walk alongside you with guidance, encouragement and ongoing support, helping you develop not only your confidence in practising Reiki but also your own unique relationship with this beautiful path.

"The true gift of Reiki is not simply the ability to place your hands on another. It is the quiet transformation that begins within yourself and ripples gently out into the world around you."

What to Expect During a Reiki Session

If you have never experienced Reiki before, you may be wondering what happens during a session. A Reiki session is a gentle and deeply relaxing experience. You remain fully clothed, lying comfortably on a treatment couch or seated in a chair if that is more suitable for you. After a short consultation to discuss how you are feeling and what you hope to gain from the session, I will gently place my hands either lightly on or just above different areas of your body, allowing Reiki to flow where it is most needed.

There is no massage or manipulation involved. Many people describe feeling a comforting warmth, gentle tingling, deep relaxation or a sense of peaceful stillness, while others simply enjoy the opportunity to rest quietly. Every experience is unique, and there is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki. The intention is to create a calm and supportive space where your mind and body can relax, allowing your natural healing processes to be gently supported. After your session, there is time to talk about your experience, ask any questions and receive guidance on any self-care practices that may help you continue to feel grounded and supported.

Reiki as a Way of Living

Although many people first encounter Reiki through a healing treatment, Reiki is much more than something we receive. It is something we embody. Traditional Usui Shiki Ryōhō encourages us to develop a daily practice through teachings such as Hatsurei Hō, Jyoshin Kokyū Hō and the Reiki Precepts. These practices gently cultivate mindfulness, emotional balance and self-awareness, helping us respond to life with greater calm, kindness and resilience.

Over time, Reiki becomes woven into everyday life. It influences not only how we care for ourselves, but also how we relate to others and the world around us. It becomes less about doing Reiki and more about living Reiki.

How Can Reiki Support Healing?

One of the most beautiful aspects of Reiki is its simplicity. During a Reiki treatment, the client remains fully clothed while resting comfortably as the practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, the body. Many people describe feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful and nurtured during a session.

Every experience is unique, but clients commonly share:

Deep relaxation

Reduced feelings of stress and anxiety

A greater sense of emotional balance

Improved sleep

Feeling calmer and more grounded

A renewed sense of clarity and wellbeing

Reiki does not seek to force change. Instead, it creates an environment where the body and mind may move towards greater balance and ease. Many people choose to incorporate Reiki into their wider wellbeing routine alongside counselling, mindfulness, massage, yoga or other complementary therapies.

Reiki and Modern Research

Although Reiki remains a complementary therapy rather than a replacement for conventional medical treatment, research continues to explore its potential benefits. Several systematic reviews have found that Reiki may help reduce stress, anxiety and pain while promoting relaxation and improving overall wellbeing. Some studies have also reported improvements in fatigue, mood and quality of life, particularly for people living with long-term health conditions or receiving cancer care. However, researchers also note that larger, high-quality studies are still needed to strengthen the evidence base.

One area where there is growing agreement is Reiki's ability to support the body's relaxation response. When we experience deep relaxation, our nervous system shifts away from the fight, flight or freeze response and towards the parasympathetic state, often referred to as rest and digest. This shift may help lower stress levels, support emotional regulation and create favourable conditions for healing and recovery.

Many hospitals, hospices and cancer support centres around the world now offer Reiki as part of their complementary care programmes to help patients manage stress, anxiety, pain and emotional wellbeing alongside their medical treatment. It is important to remember that Reiki is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions, nor should it replace advice or treatment from your GP, consultant or other healthcare professional. Instead, Reiki is best understood as a complementary therapy that supports the whole person while working alongside conventional healthcare.

Why I Teach Reiki Differently

I believe Reiki should never be rushed. Just as nature does not hurry the changing of the seasons or the unfolding of a flower, our own healing deserves time, care and intention. For this reason, I teach Reiki as a Four Week Sacred Initiation into Usui Shiki Ryōhō Reiki First Degree, rather than compressing everything into a single intensive day.

Together we journey with the rhythm of the Moon. Beginning at the New Moon, we spend three online preparation evenings exploring Reiki philosophy, energetic awareness, meditation, the Reiki Precepts and preparing body, mind and spirit to receive Reiju, the traditional Japanese spiritual blessing that begins your lifelong relationship with Reiki.

We then gather together in person for your Reiju Day around the Full Moon, allowing everything you have learned to settle and deepen before your initiation. This slower approach creates space for genuine understanding, confidence and embodiment.

Why Autumn is the Perfect Season

Autumn is nature's season of wisdom. The trees remind us that letting go is not something to fear. Leaves fall because they have completed their purpose. In much the same way, we are invited to release old patterns, limiting beliefs and ways of being that no longer support who we are becoming. As the natural world turns inwards, we too are offered an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves. There is something profoundly supportive about beginning Reiki at this time of year.

Your Four Week Sacred Initiation Includes

Your Reiki journey includes:

  • Three live online preparation evenings
  • One full in-person Reiju Day
  • Traditional Usui Shiki Ryōhō Reiki First Degree Reiju
  • Self-healing practices to support your daily wellbeing
  • Learning how to offer Reiki treatments to others
  • Traditional hand positions and Reiki philosophy
  • Grounding, energetic awareness and mindful practice
  • Comprehensive training manual
  • Reiki First Degree Certificate
  • Ongoing mentoring and support as your Reiki practice unfolds

Training is offered either on a one-to-one basis or within an intimate group of no more than four students, allowing every participant individual guidance, plenty of time to practise and a safe, nurturing learning environment.

Not Sure if Reiki is Right for You?

If you are curious about Reiki but are unsure whether training is the right next step, why not begin with a private Reiki healing session? Experiencing Reiki for yourself is often the best introduction.

A one-to-one treatment allows you to experience the deeply relaxing nature of Reiki while exploring whether this gentle practice resonates with you. Many of my students choose to receive a healing session before beginning their First Degree, finding that it gives them a deeper appreciation of the practice and greater confidence as they begin their own journey. Sometimes the first step is simply allowing yourself to receive.

An Invitation

Reiki is not about becoming someone different. It is about remembering who you have always been beneath the busyness of everyday life. It is a lifelong path of healing, presence and compassionate awareness that continues to unfold with every season. If you feel a quiet calling towards Reiki, perhaps this is your season to begin.

Bookings are now open for this autumn's Four Week Sacred Initiation into Usui Shiki Ryōhō Reiki First Degree, with training available as a one-to-one experience or within a small group of no more than four students.

If you would simply like to experience the gentle support of Reiki before committing to training, I would be delighted to welcome you for an individual Reiki healing session. Whether you come for healing, learning or simply out of curiosity, it would be an honour to walk alongside you. "The journey home is not about becoming someone new. It is about remembering who you have always been."

May this autumn be the season you choose to come home to yourself.
