Emotional Freedom Technique -EFT

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping therapy, is a holistic healing practice that uses a combination of acupressure and psychology to relieve physical and emotional pain. EFT is based on the principle that the mind and body are interconnected, and that unresolved emotional issues can manifest as physical symptoms. The technique involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on a particular issue or condition. In this blog, we will explore the history of EFT, how it works, what is involved and what to expect in a session.

EFT was developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineering graduate and personal performance coach. Craig was interested in the meridian energy system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its potential for healing traumas and negative emotions. Craig studied TCM and combined it with psychological therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), to create EFT.

Craig's main breakthrough was in simplifying the TCM meridian system through the use of the "basic recipe" and discovering that tapping could be an effective way to unblock energy flow and reduce stress. He further refined and simplified the technique and made it accessible to the general public by creating a easy-to-understand EFT manual and video series. Since then, EFT has gained popularity worldwide and is now used by thousands of people.

EFT is based on the principle that emotional experiences and traumas get stored in the body's energy system and can disrupt the normal flow of energy throughout the body’s meridian system. In TCM, the energy or life force is called "Qi" (pronounced "chee") and flows through the body along pathways known as meridians. These meridians can become blocked, and this blocked energy can lead to physical pain and emotional distress.

EFT involves tapping specific acupuncture points on the face, chest, and hands while focusing on a particular issue or condition. The tapping process stimulates the energy meridians and clears blockages to allow for the flow of energy to return to normal. As the energy flows more freely, it leads to a reduction in negative emotions and physical symptoms.

An EFT session usually lasts around 60 minutes, and there are two main components; the intake and the tapping.

During the intake, the EFT practitioner will ask questions about your current physical and emotional state and any issues or traumas you may have experienced. They will also explain the EFT process and answer any questions you may have. The practitioner will then work with you to identify the root cause of your emotional or physical issue.

The actual tapping process involves tapping specific acupressure points on the face, chest, and hands while talking about the issue or trauma. The practitioner will guide you through the tapping sequence, which involves tapping lightly on the points while repeating specific statements. The statements used in EFT are designed to help release negative emotions and beliefs and promote positive affirmations.

As you tap, you may experience physical sensations such as tingling, warmth, or relaxation, which are normal and indicate the healing process is underway. After a few rounds of tapping, the practitioner will check in with you to assess the progress of the session and adjust the tapping sequence as necessary.

The tapping sequence can be repeated multiple times in one session, depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed. The practitioner may also assign "homework," which may involve additional tapping sequences or exercises to do between sessions.

EFT can help with a wide variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, phobias, trauma, addiction, physical pain, and more. It can also help with self-esteem, relationship issues, and performance anxiety.

EFT works by reducing stress and releasing emotional blocks, which can lead to a reduction in physical pain and negative emotions. It is believed that tapping on the specific acupressure points on the body can help to stimulate the body's natural healing system and allow for a more balanced flow of energy. When energy flows continuously, it can lead to a state of greater wellbeing.

An EFT session typically takes place in a private setting. The practitioner may start by asking some basic questions about your health history and the issues you would like to address. After the intake, you will be asked to focus on the issue while the practitioner guides you through the tapping sequence.

As you tap, you may feel a range of physical sensations and emotions, such as fatigue, warmth, or emotional release. These sensations are normal and indicate that the healing process is working.

The tapping sequence can be repeated multiple times during the session, depending on the complexity of the issue. The practitioner will check in with you during the session to assess how you are feeling and make any necessary adjustments to the tapping sequence.

After the session, you may feel more relaxed, calm, and able to handle difficult situations with greater ease. You may also experience a reduction in physical pain and negative emotions.

EFT is a holistic healing technique that can be effective in addressing physical and emotional health issues. It is based on the principle that unresolved emotional issues can disrupt the flow of energy in the body's meridian system and lead to physical pain and negative emotions. Through the process of tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on a particular issue or condition, EFT clears blockages in the energy meridians and promotes a balanced flow of energy throughout the body.
