What is Clinical Hypnotherapy and who can it help?

Clinical hypnotherapy has become increasingly popular among people looking to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. It's a technique that involves hypnosis, a state of consciousness in which the mind is focused and receptive to suggestion. In this blog post, we will explore the history of hypnotherapy, how it works, what's involved in a session, how it helps, and what to expect.

Hypnotherapy can be traced back to ancient times, when it was used for various purposes such as healing, spiritual rituals, and divination. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians,  all had variations of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool.

The modern history of hypnotherapy began in the 18th century with the work of Franz Mesmer, an Austrian physician who believed in the power of an invisible force he called "animal magnetism." Mesmer used various techniques, including hypnosis, to treat his patients. His ideas were later discredited by the medical establishment, but the concept of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool persisted.

In the late 19th century, the British physician James Braid coined the term "hypnosis" and is credited with establishing hypnotherapy as a legitimate medical practice. Since then, hypnotherapy has been used to treat a wide range of physical and mental health issues.

Hypnotherapy involves inducing a medative-like state of consciousness through hypnosis. This state allows the client to access their subconscious mind, where deeply ingrained beliefs, memories, and emotions reside.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will guide the person into a state of relaxation using various techniques, including guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation. Once in a medative-like state, the person is more open to suggestion, and the therapist can help them explore and address any issues or problems they may be experiencing.

The first session with a hypnotherapist will usually involve an assessment  to discuss the clients health history, current problems, and desired outcomes from hypnotherapy. The therapist will then create a treatment plan tailored to the person's needs.

During a session, the person lies down or sits comfortably while the therapist guides them into a state of deep relaxation through hypnosis. The therapist will then use various techniques to help the person explore their subconscious mind, including guided imagery, positive affirmations, and visualisation exercises.

Most hypnotherapy sessions last between 60 minutes to an hour and a half, and the client may feel a sense of relaxation and calm during and after the session. The therapist may also offer guidance and support for the person's spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to have many benefits for both physical and mental health. Some of the conditions that can benefit from hypnotherapy include:

Anxiety and stress: Hypnotherapy can help reduce anxiety and stress through relaxation techniques and positive affirmations.

Pain management: Hypnotherapy can help alleviate pain by focusing on positive thoughts and relaxation.

Weight loss: Hypnotherapy can help with weight loss by addressing the psychological factors underlying overeating and unhealthy eating habits.

Substance abuse: Hypnotherapy can help address the underlying emotional and psychological issues that contribute to substance abuse.

Depression: Hypnotherapy can help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.

Along with helping clear and reset fears, phobias and habits.

Hypnotherapy sessions are generally very gentle and non-invasive. The person may feel a deep sense of relaxation and peace during the session, and some may experience emotional releases as they explore their subconscious mind.

It is important to note that hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical treatment. People with serious medical conditions should consult with their doctor before undergoing hypnotherapy.
